The Sauerkraut process was a bit off this year. The cool fall weather caused it to stall in the fermentation process, so Jon had to drag the crock into the wood shop,
and turn on the furnace to warm it up so it would get done.

It finally was ready to can the second week in November (I know I'm behind but I have been having some computer problems, back problems, Grace moving out :( and just plain trying to keep my head above the current!!). We for got to do our annual drinking of the kraut juice, most of the kids were not at all bothered by this miss of tradition.

Love a guy who can take on "women's work" and do it proudly! That's a good guy you got there. I would love, love, love, to darken your back door and pick up a quart of REAL sauerkraut. I just opened a can from Walmart yesterday. Not the same.
Okay, you are luring me back to the Midwest. The raspberries, the sauerkraut, the lefse. . . Maybe we should retire in that part of the country so I can "darken your doorstep" more frequently. Hmmm. . .the cold, the snow, the blizzards. Oh, I'm better now. That effectively took care of any homesickness.
I would LOVE a jar of sauerkraut!
Good guy, John! You drink the leftover juice??!!! The thot makes my stomach roll. Why would you do that?
Good point Barb. Why do you drink it?
I'm sure it started with Jon saying to one of the kids "I'll give you a dollar if you drink this" followed by some fabricated story about how in the old country thats what they do to prove your of real German heritage and some how it became a crazy tradition. It has been a source of good humor over the years.
And your sure to have some for Christmas dinner!

Yum yum yum! Nothing beats fresh sauerkraut.
Drinking the juice is like drinking probiotics. It fills you up with all those good bacterias that most people don't get anymore. It was a winter remedy for staying healthy.
Now that's a good catch Jody! A man that cans!
